WORK FOR INDEPENDENCE

As part of the work for independence program, students, ages 14 and older, have the opportunity to work at various sites in the community on a volunteer basis. This experience helps students to gain responsibilities and job skills. Currently students go out once a week and have the choice of working at one of the following three sites: Outback Steakhouse Restaurant where students assist with food preparation, The Reading Hospital and Medical Center where their job varies from clerical work to sorting and packaging materials, and Manor Care where students work in the housekeeping department performing duties such as sweeping, dusting, and emptying the trash.

If a student is unhappy with a particular job or if they would like to explore other areas, they have the freedom to choose a new work site. A job coach accompanies students to the site for assistance and support.

Vocational-Technical Program

Students 16 years and older have the option to attend a local vocational-technical school on a half-day basis.
