Music therapist Cindy Long teaches John Paul II students through the “language” of music. Whether is it playing the tambourine, beating on a djembe drum, or singing along as Cindy plays her guitar, students interact and communicate with each other through music – they always have fun (and learn at the same time) during “Music Class with Ms. Long.”

Cub Scouts in Pack 222 look forward to the action packed Pinewood Derby held here each spring. The Cubs spend countless hours sanding, painting, and assembling their block of wood into sleek racing cars. What makes this Pack tick is not only the boys who enjoy scouting, but also the dedicated volunteer Pack leaders who create an opportunity for the Cub Scouts to do advancement work and host a variety of activities, including cookouts, learning about camping, and building volcanoes.

Reading Phillies’ mascot Screwball was one of our special visitors during Celebrity Reading Week in mid-March. Screwball brought along Phillies Educational Programs Coordinator Todd Hunsicker to read “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.” The students were thrilled to meet Screwball, and they enjoyed the silly story read and acted out by Todd. The Celebrity Reading event was kicked off by a visit by Bishop John Barres, who read “The Rainbow Fish.” Other celebrity readers included WEEU’s Dave Kline, musician Chris Heslop, and WFMZ- TV Channel 69’s Melissa Fullerton.

Sixth grade students from LaSalle Academy in Shillington teamed up with John Paul II students to decorate Easter eggs with the Pysanky process, a Ukrainian egg decorating tradition. Diane Rollins started this wonderful event three years ago when demonstrating the Pysanky process to John Paul students. This year Diane and JPII teacher Shelly Kreska added the special touch of having students from LaSalle come to John Paul II Center to help our students with the egg decorating. Students from both schools benefitted from the workshop – all the students made a new friend, and got to decorate a beautiful egg to take home as a keepsake.
