LIFE SKILLS

The life skills program teaches specific skills such as: planning and cooking meals, washing and drying laundry, using the telephone properly, and volunteering/socializing in the community. As part of our program, students in the secondary class prepare lunch once a week for the rest of the school to purchase. The students plan the menu, go shopping for the groceries, and prepare and serve the food. Our kitchen facility is set up like a residential kitchen. Here the students learn to run the dishwasher and cook food on the stove or in the oven. They also learn to run the cash register for students purchasing lunch.

Secondary students also go out into the community on a monthly basis to work on social skills. Whether it be a trip to a local restaurant for lunch, shopping at the mall, or taking in a show at the Sovereign Performing Arts Center, the life skills program gives students an opportunity to explore their community and prepare to be participating members of the community.
